Thank you all!
I started on this post last night, and then the news that a volunteer firefighter from Canberra, who had gone down to Victoria to help with the still-active fires, had been killed when a burnt tree fell on his tanker. And the sheer injustice of it meant that I stepped away from lj and just ranted at the universe for a bit.

The universe kept on with its merry spinning, expansion and secret-keeping on the topics of gravity and dark matter, and the firefighter's family released a stoic statement saying that they were proud of him, and that he had considered himself duty-bound to go down after the Victorian fighters who had come up to Canberra during their terrible fires some six or so years ago.

Then the Westboro Baptist Church declared that they were glad god had killed hundreds of Australians in the fires. And suddenly I felt much chirpier -- indeed, thrilled to have an Australian passport -- because when the WBC hates you, you know you are doing things right.

Thank you so very much to everyone who has done so much for the Australian Red Cross, WIRES, TREW, the RSPCA, the Salvos and every other organisation that is doing such good work helping the people and animals of the fire-hit areas. Even people who could only give a few dollars have really helped to make a huge difference.

I've just realised that I wrote donator the other day, which only goes to show that I need more regular sleep.

pir8fancier 's fic auction topped out at US$300 with the fabbo lisa3353  being the winner, libby_drew 's auction was won by flaeyr  at US$200. bryoneybrynn  has run through all of her promised fics and icons, then done even more! Which means I can't do the maths, but thank you!

syllic  the marvellous medievalist auctioned her Merlin fic for US$100 to la_la_la  and cest_what 's bandom bonanza raked in $160. abusing_sarcasm raked in some dosh for mostly Drake/Josh, while the_gubette  was a love and paid $50 for a faithwood  fic.

The thrill of pushdragon  fic pushed people into fits of generosity and her $12 minumums became $20s, $50s and $80s. snarkyscorp  shelled out $80 for marguerite_26 's gorgeous prose, and then earned $110 through her own efforts, thanks to zeto .

femmequixotic , who is delightful, has raised at least $500 with her fics, and mad_maudlin  has pulled in a nice sum, too.

An especial thanks to piratesmile331  who is doing a brilliant job both spreading the word and funding TREW and to the lovely lovely thisgirl_is  who accidentally put her RSPCA donation through four times and then did not cancel any of them, because she is a darling.

You have all helped to rebuild lives for people, animals, wildlife and communities.

The death toll currently stands at 201, though it's not going to stay there. At least 30 people are still missing, and the police have brought in specialists to try and identify human bodies amid the ash.

Finally, the lovely bryoney suggested that it would not hurt to remind people there's a reason everyone has been pimping the same charities. These are the big or local groups that we know are doing good work down there. Other groups are also doing great jobs, but unfortunately there are also some scammers. If you find a group that you would like to donate to but are unsure of their credentials, check them out here at Scamwatch.

Oh, no, really finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAYS to alienor77310  and captainsiri !

God, I love it when fandom pulls together! This is why it's about so much more than just cute boys getting it on. Thanks for this wonderful summary post - it's really heartwarming to see the good amidst all the crap

fandom is indeed a beautiful thing sometimes

I really wish the use of the word 'church' could be copyrighted or protected in some way. Everytime I read something along the lines of 'Such-and-such church is glad you're all dead' I want to cry.

And I have been so grateful for your posts, which have more depth to them than any news coverage I've seen yet...thank you!

Oh FFS! The WBC can kiss my sinful, pasty arse. What a bunch of wankers, grrrrr, well, you know how I feel about their kind. *throws hissy fit*

But you make up for them with these wonderful summary posts, my dear - it's great to see all the good stuff in one place! :D

At the end of the day, I managed to make $50, too, the majority of which came from people who wanted me to write Drake & Josh fic, so it was a cross-fandom effort! :D

Thanks for giving us something POSITIVE to read about this whole thing!!!

Yay! So cool. I love to see people pull together like this. :)

WBC is like a moral compass for us all, just not the way they think.

In fairness, the RSPCA website did say that their site did occasionally have issues, but did put payments through, and that if you got an error message you should check with your credit card company before doing it again. I just... am the person who will KEEP HITTING THE BUTTON ANYWAY.

Thanks bunches for making this clear to the entire internet. :oP

Hey darling. I don't even know Piratesmile331 so it was wonderful to see your post. Please pass on a huge thank you for me.

As a matter of interest, little TREW, who had basically nothing in the kitty when this started, have posted a public statement saying that as of last weekend, they'd received just over $10,000 in donations in the week. Now compared to the Red Cross appeal etc, this may not look like much, but that money will go to buying feed and equipment over winter when the 'crisis' is past and donations of usable goods trickle off, as they inevitably will.

I can't thank everyone enough for helping. If anyone's curious to see what's being done, pop over to www.triplerequinewelfare.org and have a look - the website is updated and there's a summary of the first week, as well as ongoing news and a place where people can post messages to those who are fire-affected - just to let them know they're not alone, and that they have the thoughts and support of a larger world.

That's all so wonderful. It's incredible what fandom does when we get together. Makes me very proud to be a part of this fandom.

A couple of things - aoifene has also raised nearly $500 with her jewelery sale and also accio_scar purchased fic for $50 from her as well.

And secondly, I know people are looking at your lj for updates on this type of thing so if everyone could go to chaeldub's Lj and welcome her back. She got caught and almost lost her house. Burnt out her property and melted several things in her house etc and she stayed to fight and saved the house. She's been evacuated for a week and only just returned. She's a bit shaky, but she's ok.

Every time I hear of the Westboro Baptist Church and their deeds, I only manage to keep from heading down the road to Topeka to do severe vandalism to their "house of worship" by believing that each time one of their congregation dies, they will find a closed and locked set of Pearly Gates and St. Peter pointing out through the bars saying, "You are to take the down elevator, they are expecting you."

Oooooh, those Westboro idiots make my skin crawl! They also make me want to forget my Hippocratic Oath... They are very nearly the only people in the world who literally make me murderous. *sigh* But, as you say, when WBC hates you, you must be doing something right. (Do you suppose they recognize that they are very nearly a parody of themselves at this point?)

"Do you suppose they recognize that they are very nearly a parody of themselves at this point?" That would require a sense of self-awareness.

I am starting to think they are just fame-junkies - anything bad happens, there they are getting their names in the papers alongside it. It's pretty pathetic really.

I think you are very likely correct. Do you think if the news media put a nationwide moratorium on reporting anything about them, they'd curl up and die? Or at least STFU? I just can't understand how they can spew such vicious, vile hatred, and still claim to be Christians.
This Girlthisgirl_is on February 19th, 2009 10:24 pm (UTC)
Sadly, it seems that a nationwide moratorium would no longer suffice.

On the plus side, I think the British response will probably be quite amusing.

They can claim what they like, anyone who begins any statement with "God hates..." is clearly talking out their arses. It's an easy first religious-bullshit filter.
