20 years of Harry Potter!
Back in 1997, Bloomsbury took a punt on a book they thought might do rather well.

I'm so tremendously thrilled they did!

Thank you, Jo, thank you, Harry, thank you fandom. SO much joy from one good publishing decision!

I must have found them when it was still fairly new then, I think autumn of '98. I had seen an article in the Anchorage Daily News talking about these new books that had kids who don't read not only reading but refusing to put the book down. I was working in a used book store that year, and a week or three after reading that article a man came in with some used books to trade, among them the first Harry Potter book. After he left I picked it up and glanced at the first page to see what the fuss was about, and promptly forgot where I was until the next customer came up to buy something, a good 20 or 30 pages later. Needless to say, I didn't put that book in the "to shelve" pile, but instead into the "I will buy this at the end of today's shift and take it home" pile.

I know this is late - I was on holiday with my son over in Britain (what a way to celebrate 20 years, right!). It's amazing that one little book and one decision by a company, had such a huge effect on so many lives. I've met so many wonderful people in fandom that I never would have met otherwise. *hugs*

Re: Brammers, happy birthday!
Thanks so much, Karin! What a lovely birthday wish! Hugs back! Mr B and I are both doing well, and the cats are also in fine fettle. We have inherited a flock of sulphur crested cockatoos that demand sunflower seeds and I am tempted to include them in the family group, but I suspect that we are more hostages there :-)
