Liveblogging the Second US Presidential Debate
Roll up, roll up, the circus is back in town!

Not enough time has passed from the frst debate for me to consider voluntarily watching it anything other than deliberate self-harm, but I'm going to give it a go. I have a banana and a bottle of soda water, I am READY.

I watched the VP debate, but couldn't stay awake long enough to blog it. Is Pence the guy who wants women to hold funerals for their miscarried foetuses? That's some perverse woman-hating crap right there.

In terms of this week, and indeed, today's developments, a few brief points. Firstly, those women in that press conference looked as though they were in a hostage situation and I want to rescue them. We need to know they are OK and that their families are OK and I am not kidding about this.

Secondly, there is a thing called psychological projection. In future years, the Republican candidate in this election will be used on the cover of books discussing the phenomenon. I look forward to his future failings as his irredeemably tarnished brand sees investors flee him.

And finally, no lawyer wants to defend a rapist, especially a child rapist. But the entirety of our legal system relies on every lawyer doing the very best job they can for every client, especially when they are court-appointed for random clients who could easily be failed by the system. I can fully see how that would not matter in the slightest to the victim, and have nothing but contempt for anyone who would exploit her like this.

OK, five minutes to kick-off. Time for a few stretches!

The woman introducing the moderators is dressed like a beatnik and I love her stylings. Anderson Coper and a woman whose name I don't catch are the hosts, they outline the town-hall procedures and ask people to abide by them. Shots of the families, who all look poised and well-groomed, despite probably planning death, death and more death. And now, with a bald eagle crest that looks as though it's doing yoga, we stare at the set for a minute or two.

In a perfect world, Trump has just gone Hillary off set and she's shanked him.

Still waiting. Its starting to look a bit awkward.

Who is the blonde host? My local newsreader fluffed her name and I've got a low US journo reognition for people I don't follow on Twitter. And then we cut to the sound feed JUST AFTER she introduces herself. Dammit! Martha someone. She looks clever and firm. I learn later it's Raddatz, but I've left as Martha below. She seems as though she is holding back a massive eye roll.

Here they are. Trump looks as though he would rather be anywhere else and as though his suit doesn't fit him properly. Clinton looks a little bit like a penguin.

First question: Do you feel you're modelling appropriate and positive behaviour for today's youth?

Clinton: Lots of people are concerned about the things being said and done in this campaign. We need to make it clear to our children that our country is great because it's good. We should be good. She goes on with some nice comments about reaching out to everyone and the benefits of public service and working together. Clever language about big goals like getting the economy to work for everyone not just the 1%, better education and so on. Believes it can all happen if we're 'stronger together'. Good on-brand opening!

Trump: I agree with everything she said. I began this campaign because I was tired of seeing things happening to this country. I'm a politician, I am now. I wanted to make America great again. Obamacare is horrible. It's so expensive! The Iran deal is a disaster! Iran is the number one terrorist state! When I look at all of this, and see our potential, we have tremendous potential, but we're doing so badly. A huge defecit. We're going to bring back law and order. They shoot policemen. We have to have justice. I want to do things that haven't been done, including making our inner cities good for the blacks and Latinos.

Cooper talks about Trump's audio tape. 'That was sexual assault, do you understand that?'

Trump: No, you didn't understand what was said. Also, I'm less horrible than ISIS. ISIS are REALLY BAD! And they're doing so well against us. I will knock the hell out of ISIS. ISIS is HIllary's fault. I will take care of them. It's so much more important.

Cooper: Are you saying that you did not kiss or grope women without consent?

Trump: No one has more respect for women than I do. They have great respect for me. I never did those things. I'm going to make our country safe. People are pouring in here. We're going to make America great again, and make it wealthy again. They're taking our jobs and our wealth.

Cooper: Clinton?

Clinton: I've thought about this. I've disagreed with other GOP nominees but never questioned their fitness to serve. I think Trump is not fit. Many Republicans agree. This is what Donald thinks about women. He's said the video doesn't represent who it is. It represents exactly who he is as we have seen him insult women, rank women, embarrass women, denigrating a former Miss Universe for a week. It's who he is. It's not only women, it's not only this video. He's also denigrated immigrants, African Americans, Muslims, people with disabilities and so many others. This is not who we are. I want to send a message to every boy and girl that America already is great and we are great because we are good and we will respect and work with one another and we will celebrate our diversity. This is the America I know and love and will serve if I become President.

Trump: I assume I'm allowed to respond to that. It's just words folks. Weve heard them when Hillary talks and fails for years. It's all a disaster. I'm going to help the African Americans, she wants their vote and she does nothing. We saw that firsthand when she was Senator.

Megan: I want to get to some online questions.

Trump: So she can do that but I can't. That's fair (sarcastically)

Megan: Question from online 'Trump says the campiagn has changed him, when did that happen?'

Trump: Look, it's just locker room talk. Bill Clinton is FAR WORSE. There's never been ayone in the history of politics in this nation who's been so abusive to women. Hillary attacked those same women, viciously. One of them was raped at 12. She represented him and got him off and she's seen laughing at the girl on two occasions. Don't talk to me about words. He was impeached and lost his licence to practice law, He had to pay an $850,000 fine. I think it's disgraceful and she should be ashamed of herself.

Clinton: So much of that is not right, but he gets to decide what he wants to talk about instead of answering questions and laying out his political agenda. When I hear that, I'm reminded of Michelle Obama, When they go low, you go high. If it were about one video, then sure. But everyone can draw their own conclusions. He never apologises to anyone. Not to the Kahns, not to the judge, not to the reporter he mocked, not for birtherism. (HILS, GO HIGHER!) He needs to take responsibility for his actions and his words.

Trump: You started birtherism! You owe him an apology. As for Michelle Obama, I saw the commercials they did on you, and I saw the most vicious commercials I ever saw with Michelle Obama talking about you. They won and you lost fair and square, not like against Bernie, just look at Wikileaks. But the thing you should be apologsing for are the 33,000 emails you deleted [DRINK!] and now there are more emails missing. If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your lies and deception. In my opinion the people are furious. THE EMAILS THE EMAILS I CANNOT KEEP TYPING THIS FUCKING CRAP ABOUT THE FUCKING EMAILS. Apparently he's going to send her to jail over the emails.

Clinton: Go to my website and factcheck all this. There's so much crap there. This is why he shouldn't be in charge of the law.

Trump: You'd be in jail.

Megan: So to the emails…

Clinton: It was a mistake. I take responsibility for it. Were I to do it over again, I would not. It's important to point out that some of this accusations are misleading. After a year-long investigation there is no evidence of hacking that server or that any classified material ended up in the wrong hands [UNLIKE WIKILEAKS OF GOV SERVERS, IT'S WORTH MENTIONING.] I take classified information very seriously.

Trump: And yet she didn't know what the letter C on a document meant. She's lying. It wasn't fine to delete 33,000 emails. She said they were about her daughter's wedding and a yoga class. Maybe three … [HE HAS NEVER PLANNED A WEDDING] And I am so disappointed with our justice department for letting this happen. You should be ashamed for deleting 39,000 emails [IT'S GROWN]. She should go to jail.

Cooper starts to move them on to the next question. Trump interjects petulantly – Anderson, why aren't you bringing up the emails?

Cooper: We just brought up the emails. Next question.

Person: Obamacare is expensive! It's not working! What will you do?

Clinton: I have a series of actions to get those costs down. Reining in the costs needs to be the highest priority. The Affordable Healthcare Act doesn't just mean 20 million more insured people, but also 170 million of us who get benefits like companies can't deny us coverage, no lifetime limits, women can't be charged more than men, kids up to 26 can be on parents' policies. We need to get costs down and help small businesses, but if we repeal it, we all lose all the new benefits. Right now we have 90% coverage, I want us at 100% with costs down and quality up.

Trump: This is what people ask me more than anything else except defence. Obamacare is a disaster, It's only going to get worse. Their method of fixing it is to ask congress for more money. Obamacare will never work, it's too expensive for the person who has it and for our country. We have to repeal it and replace it with something less epxnsive that works. We need to get rid of the lines around the states that stop companies coming in and competing. She wants a plan like Canada's, which is a disaster. Canadians come to the US for medical care. Hillary Clinton has been after this for years. Obamacare was the first step and it was a disaster. It's a disater and must be repealed.

Cooper: Your husband called Obamacare crazy as costs soared for small business and deductibles went up, is he wrong?

Clinton: We have an employer-based system in this country. If we could start again, we'd probably do it differently, but that's what we have. The Affordable Care Act is meant to fill the gaps left in that system and we have filled that for 20 million people. If we rip it up, we hand everything over to the companies who can then do what they want. Let's fix what's broken but not hand it back over to the insurance companies.

Trump: Everything is broken about it. Bernie Sanders has said Hillary has bad judgement, this is an example. We are going to have plans that are so good because you're going to have so much competition once you break down the boundary lines. Obamacare is a fraud, by the way, you know that. When we get rid of those lines you will have competition and you will be able to have pre-existing. We'll block grant into the states so we can take care of the poor.

Megan: Next question

Woman: There are 3.3 million Muslim women in the US. Islamaphobia is on the rise. How will you help women like me being labelled a threat to the country after this election?

Trump: Islamaphobia is a shame, but there is a problem. We have to be sure that Muslims come in and report what's going on when they see a problem. Look at San Bernadino. All those people saw those explosives and didn't report them. If they don't do that, it's a very dfficult situation for a country, you look at Orlando, San Bernadino. SHE won't even say Radical Islamic Terrorists, neither will Obama. And before you solve it you have to say the name.

Clinton: Thank you for the question, Ive heard it a lot. There's been a lot of very divisive, dark things said about Muslims. We've had Muslims in America since George Washington, many very successful, like Muhammad Ali. My vsion of America sees everyone have a place if they work hard and contribute. It's short sighted and dangerous to be involved in the demagogic rhetoric of Donald. So many Muslims say how important it is that they feel included and important as part of our country. I intend to defeat ISIS as part of a coalition with Islamic nations and we need to be able to work with those nations. These violent Jihadist terrorists like what Donald says.

Megan reminds us of Trump's Muslim immigration ban, and that Pence has said it's no longer a position.

Trump: Capatin Kahn is an American hero and he would be alive if I had been President because, unlike her, I wouldn't have voted for the war. The Muslim ban has morphed into extreme vetting where we go into areas like Syria where they are coming in in the tens of thousands because Obama and Hillary want to … we have no idea who they are or what their feelings are. This could be the great Trojan horse of our time. I believe in building safe zones and other people paying for them, I dont want hunderds of thousands of people from Syria coming in when we don't know who they are.

Megan: Senator Clinton, you want more Syrian refugees, why take the risk?

Hillary: I won't let people in who pose a risk, but there are a lot of women and children who have been bombed by Russian and Syrian air forces and they are suffering. We need to do our part. We won't carry anything like the load of Europe or many other states. We will have vetting, but it is important for us as a policy to not ban people based on religion. We are a country founded on religious freedom and liberty. How do we act as he suggests without causing great stress? Religous tests? I thought what he said was unwise and dangerous and it plays into the proganada on terrorist sites and is used to recruit fighters, who want to create a war against us. By the way, the whole country has seen him supporting the invasion of Iraq.

Trump: Hillary Clinton, criminal illegal aliens we can't send back to their country and she lets that happen. I'm going to force them back into their country. Bernie Sanders was right about her bad judgement. Refugees cause crime. And drugs! The border people love me! They LOVE ME!!! I understnd the border, she doesn't. It's horrible. She'd got bad judgement. So bad.

Megan: Online question. Wikileaks says that Clinton has said you need both a public and private position on policies. Is that OK?

Clinton: As I recall, that was something I said about Abhraham Lincoln after seeing the Spielberg movie. It was a masterclass seeing Lincoln get congress to approve the 13th ammendment, it was principled and strategic. He had to use different arguments wth different people, which I thought was a great display of plitical leadership. Let's talk about what's going on here. The intelligence community said that Putin is directing these hacks and Wikileaks is part of that. We have never in the history of our coutry been in a position when an adversarial foreign power has worked so hard to influence an election, and theu're not working for me. They're working to get Trump elected. We deserve answers, Trump should release his tax returns so we can see his links with Russia.

Trump: So ridiculous, she got caught in a total lie, now she's blaming it on Lincoln. Honest Abe neverlied, that's the big difference between Lincoln and you. I don't know Putin. It would be great if we could get along with Russia. We dont know it's the Russians doing the hacking. I know nothing about Russia. I mean, I know Russia, but I have a great balance sheet, so great, that the US government chose me to do the Post Office. I have no loans with Russia. The government knows this well. I pay hundreds of millions of dollars of taxes. Many of her friends have massive deductions. I pay hundreds of millions of dollars. I'll release the taxes as soon as the audit is finished.

Question: How will you ensure the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes?

Trump: I'll get rid of carried interest provisions. She didn't do this, by the way. She didn't. Not for her and her friends. She's been there for 30 years, she never changes and she never will. I'm lowering taxes for corporations from 30-15 per cent and we're cutting them big league to the middle class. And she's raising your taxes really high. It's a disaster. We are going to be thriving again. We have no growth in ths country. No growth. If China has 7% it's a catastrophe, we have 1%, and our taxes are the higest in the world. She is raising everone's taxes MASSIVELY.

Hillary: That's all bunkum. It's amusing to hear someone who hasn't paid federal taxes in maybe 20 years talk about giving the welathy and corproations the biggest tax cuts they've ever had. It would raise taxes on middle class families. My plan is that no one who makes under $250,000 a year will have taxes raised, we need to go where the money is. I voted to close loopholes when I was senator. I want a tax on people making a million dollars, surcharges on incomes above $5 million, because I want to invest in families, because since the great recession the gains have all gone to the top and I want to reverse that. People like Donald who pay zero should not get away with it.

Cooper contextualises the zero comment in terms of Trump's taxes reported in the Times. Asks if Trump did take all that tax write off?

Trump: Of course I used the tax write off to avoid paying taxes, so do many of her donors. I understand the tax code better than anyone who's ever run for president amd it's very complex. Her friends and donors want these provisions to remain. She will leave them. She will leave carried interest.

Cooper: Can you say how many years you've avoided paying federal taxs?

Trump: No. She's been there for 30 years. She doesn't do anything, its all talk and no action. Really bad judgement on taxes, Libya, Syria, Iraq, SHE CREATED ISIS!!

Clinton: Ive ben trying to get rid of carried interest for years

Trump: Why didn't you?

Clinton: Because we had a Republican president with veto power. Let's talk about my 30 years. I worked to give kids health care, fixed our adoption system, got health care for NY first reponders and national guard and reserve members. Kids have better medicines and women have more rights not just here but around the world. I negotiated to lower nuclear weapons. I worked on 400 pieces of legislation. I worked hard and was rewarded with votes. As President I will use that record of work and bipartisanship.

Trump interjects. Megan shuts him down. I love Megan.

Megan: The little boy in an ambulance in Aleppo focussed attention on Syria, but there are hundreds of deaths there now including 100 children. Diane from Pennsylvania asks what you will do about Syria and Aleppo. Is it like the Holocaust where the US did nothing for years. Are we waiting too long?

Hillary: It's catastrophic, every day that goes by we see the reults of the regime's bombardment and the Russian air force's efforts to destroy Aleppo in a bid to destroy the rebels. They have't paid attention to ISIS, just Assad's enemies. I want no fly safe zones, we need leverage over the Russians and we have to work closely with our partners and allies on the ground. What is at stake is the ambition and aggression of Russia, where they have decided to be all-in in Syria. I've stood up against Russia in the past, I'll cooperate where we can, but not meekly. We should investigate the alleged war crimes.

Trump: You were secretary of state with the line in the sand

Clinton: I had left office by then.

Trump: Oh, maybe you had, but everyone knows he was still listening to you. The Russians have new nukes, ours are all old. That's a very bad thing. She talks tough against Putin and Assad, but she doesn't even know who the rebels are. We don't know. Look what she did in Libya. Everything she has done in foreign policy has been a mistake and a disaster. Look at Russia this week. And Iran. It's all her. She doesn't even know who the rebels are.

Megan: Time is up.

Trump: Assad is killing ISIS. Russia is killing ISIS. Iran is killing ISIS.

Megan repeats the question and reminds him what Pence said aout Russia needing to be met with American strength.

Trump: I disagree. Right now Syria is fighting ISIS. Syria is now Russia and Iran. [I THOUGHT IRAN WERE MEANT TO BE THE BAD GUYS, BUT NOW YOU SAY THEY'RE KILLING ISIS? PICK ONE!] But we have to get ISIS. We have to get them before we get more involved. Aleppo is a disaster, it's fallen. Take a look at Mosul. The biggest problem I have is that we announce our attacks. Why don't we do it quietly?

Megan: There may be reasons, psychological warfare, getting civilians out …

Trump: I have 200 generals who endorse me, we talk about it al the time. Why don't we go in quietly and knock them out? They can't beieve it. Patton and MacArthur are spinning in their graves at the stupidity.

Megan: Arming rebels has failed, what other strategies would you use? Would you use American force?

Clinton: Not American ground troops. We should not be an occupiying force. Special forces, enablers and trainers are very much in our interest. I hope that by the time I'm President we will have pushed ISIS out of Iraq. Donald says he knows more about ISIS than Generals, he doesn't. We need to go after al-Baghdadi. Our targeting of Al-Qaeda leaders really worked. I would also consider arming the Kurds, the Peshmerga, who have been our most effective allies. I know there is oncern about that in some circles (HI TURKEY!)

Trump: She went over a minute over and you don't stop her. I go one second over and you stop me. Very interesting.

Question: Do you believe you can be a devoted President to all the people in the United States.

Trump: Absolutely, she calls our people deplorable and irredeemable. I'll turn our country around. NAFTA is the worst agreement in the history of the world. She wants TPP. Or inner cities are devastated. Same with the Latino Americans, the Hispanic Americans. African Americans have 45% poverty in the inner cities. What do you have to lose? It can't get any worse. If she's president, it's not going to change. Nothing changes. She's all talk, she's a disaster.

Clinton: I had a lot of votes when I was running for re-election for a disaster. Mr Carter, I have tried my whole life to suport children and families. Donald talks a lot about my public service, I'm proud of it. I started off working against discrimination and I care deeply about it. I've worked with Afrcan Americans and Latinos and I have a deep devotion to making sure every American feels like he or she has a place in our country. A lot of Americans write to me talking about feeling they don't have a place in Trump's country. Children listen to what is being said and there is a lot of fear, bullying is up, a lot of unease. I will do everything I can to reach out to everybody. Even if you don't vote for me, I will stll be your President.

Cooper: You called half of Trump's suporters deplorables. How is that uniting?

Clinton: I apologised. My argument is not with his supporters, it's with him and the hateful, divisive and violent campagn he has run. What he has said about [practically everyone] he's never apologised for. Bernie and I ran a campaign based on issues. We're proud of that. We believe we can make the country better.

Trump: We have a divided nation. Look at the violence: Chicago, Charlotte… the biggest increase in murder in 45 years. Believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart, she meant irredeemable deplorables. She has such hatred. This country can't take another 4 years of Obama and that's what you get with her.

Cooper: You've written about the need for discipline in leaders, after the last debate you were tweeting about the sex tapes of a beauty queen for a week.

Trump: No I wasn't. BENGHAZI! SHE WASN'T AWAKE AT THREE IN THE MOENING! She tweeted at three in the morning. I never said that. Tweeting is a very effective form of communication. I'm proud of it.

Cooper: Does he have the discpline to be a leader?

Clinton: No. Many people think ths. Those of us who have had the great privilge of seeing the job up close and know how hard it is -- and I've worked with my husband, George W Bush and Obama, all of whom managed big things -- Trump would send us back to recession.

Megan: For the love of god, everybody shut up. Next question.

Question: What's the most importantn aspect of selecting a new supreme court justice?

Hillary: Real life experience, understanding of the world and how people live. I want to see SCOTUS reverse Citizens United. I would like them to understand that voting rigts are still a big problem in parts of our country. I want a court that will stick with Roe v Wade and Marriage Equality. Donald's candidiates are people who would reverse both of those, which would take us backwards. I want a SCOTUS that doesn't always side with corporate interests and sees rights as belonging to all not just the monied. I regret deeply the senate has not given Obama a vote on his highly competent candidate. If I win, I will immediately move to fill the vacancy.

Trump: Scalia was the best. I am looking to appoint people just like him. I've picked 20 of them, all highly respected. They need to respect the consitution. It's so important. The second ammendement is totally under siege by Hillary. I'm paying more than $100 million of my own money into my race. We're doing tremendously. She's worth $250 million thanks to being in office. Why isn't she putting any of that into her own campaign? She made it all by being in office.

Hillary: I respect the second ammendment but am for comprehensive background checks with closed loopholes.

Question: How will your energy policy meet our needs while being greenhouse friendly and minimising job losses?

Trump: The EPA is kiling the energy business in our country. I'm all for alternative, but we need much more than wind and solar. Look at our miners, she wants to put them all out of business. There is a thing called clean coal [THERE'S NOT, REALLY. THERE"S AN IDEA, BUT NOT THE FUNCTIONAL TECH]. We have tremendous wealth right under our feet. I will bring the energy companies back and they will pay off our national debts and make so much more money, and China is just dumping steel here. We have to guard our energy companies, the EPA is so restrictive they put our companies out of business. Just look what they're doing, it's a disgrace.

Hillary: China is dumping steel here and Trump is buying it to build his buidings. I fought against this as a senator and would have a trade prosecutor stopping that. We are for the first time ever energy independent, but the Middle East still controls the cost of oil. Natural gas production is up and serving as a bridge to new fuels. Being energy independent give us freedom, but my poliicy includes renewables because I think we can be the clean energy superpower, creating millions of new jobs and businesses. We need to revitalise coal country, we owe them. Look at the website for the broad policy.

Question: Regardless of the current rhetoric, can you name a thing you respect about each other?

Clinton: A fair and important question. I respect his childre, they are incredibly able and devoted and that says a lot about him. I don't agree with pretty much anything, but as a mother, I can see his kids' worth and that means a lot to me. This is an unusual election, where policy will matter for a long time. I don't want to talk about the personal, but what I want to do as president.

Trump: I consider her statement about my children as a very nice compliment, I don't know if it was meant to be. I'll say this for Hillary, she doesn't quit, she doesn't give up. She's a fighter. I disagree with what she's fighting for, but she's a fighter.

Surprisingly gracious ending there from Trump.

And there we are. In summation, we have learned the following:

* If you do something awful, point out that it was less bad than ISIS. Unless you're Bill Clinton, in which case, you're the worst.

* When they go low, we go high, but then we pause and get a few subtle kicks in because god forbid we have more than two minutes straight of focussing on the issues.

* Iran is the biggest threat in the world, except when it's the only thing standing between us and ISIS, then thank goodness for Iran, Russia and Syria.

* Trump totally paid taxes. Except for the ones he didn't pay. Also, Hillary earns 8 times more than her tax returns say, honest.

* Clinton would dearly love a time machine to go back and change her email choices, despite her actions being the same as Powell and Rice and her server more secure than a government one to all appearances.

* The questioners at this debate are really sick of the bullshit.

* The audience at this debate have watched MUCH TOO MUCH Hunger Games!

* The moderators of this and every other debate (especially the VP one) deserve a lifetime of free cake and gin.

* One banana and a litre of soda water is not sufficient brunch when you have to type for two hours.

See you for more in a week.

ETA: I FORGOT! Trump repeatedly said that Clinton 'acid washed her emails'. I was bamboozled by this reference to bad 90s fashion until I read that the program the FBI said the Clinton team used to delete some emails was called BleachBit. Donald, they don't actually bleach the internet.

That's him. Funerals. Also enthusiastically supported and signed legislation making it a crime for a woman (and also for the doctor) at even the very earliest stage for any non-fatal disability. Same legislation also mandated for anything non-survivable a woman must sit through a lecture on hospice for dying babies before they reluctantly grant permission.

I saw a thing on Twitter today that said 'Trump as the nominee. Now the GOP will finally learn what it's like to be forced to carry something you don't want to term.' Grim but so true.

You're braver than I.

I wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole even though it was being shown here.

I can't even read it, let alone listen to it. I got part of the way through, but then my brain was in danger of melting. And what's up with wikileaks? They have picked the wrong side, it seems. You know what's great about having your tv unplugged? You never have to actually see any of this crap. No sound-bite ads, nothing. It's definitely a good thing. You are a brave and courageous soul for doing this to yourself.
blamebramptonblamebrampton on October 11th, 2016 03:13 pm (UTC)
Wikileaks' founder is a misogynistic twunt and it seems that has now poisoned the organisation.

I can get involved because it's not my country and it's a few hours out of the year. If I had a year's worth of ads for these people, I would have been invoking the well organised militia part of the second amendment some years ago!
excentric397excentric397 on October 11th, 2016 05:06 pm (UTC)
I honestly don't know how people even watch tv anymore. At least 1/3 of every half hour is ads, and all the political nonsense is just more annoyance. Why we have constant campaigning is beyond me. By the time an actual election comes around, a lot of people are so sick of it that they just don't care anymore and dont bother to even vote. No one tells you what the candidates stand for, what their records are, it's all about the 'horse race', who is ahead, who is falling behind, nothing about what matters. The candidates themselves focus on what's wrong with the other person, not what they stand for or have done in the past. Between this and the 'lowest common denominator' reality tv, it's no wonder this country is populated by idiots who actually have not got a clue about anything. Oh, little angry there, aren't I? LOL

One of my friends knew him back in the day, and commented something to the effect of "Smart guy; he has funny ideas about women tho."

I am glued to this election, and your analysis is stellar! Martha Raddatz is RAD. I love how you call her Megan....LOL.

I was listening to the debate on the radio in my car. I loved it when Trump said he was a gentleman, and the audience tittered. Haha.

MARTHA! I have heard of Martha Raddatz. We had the local feed right up to the start of the debate, and cut across just in time to hear the end of the intro, after she had given her name. That's my excuse and I am standing by it ;-) She was great. I fet very sorry for both hosts and believe that whoever moderates the third debate should be given a cattle prod and the ability to use it whenever anyone lies or fails to answer the question. It would make watching it a lot more fun!

God yes. Though the baying for blood at other points had me shouting 'GO HOME, AMERICA! YOU'RE DRUNK!' at the TV.

Martha used to be a reporter on one of our local news stations. She was good then, and is good now.

Haha. The third debate moderator is a Fox News shill named Chris Wallace, who is supposedly a registered Democrat. The chances of him keeping a lid on Donald are pretty slim. I have faith Hillary will be ready for even that.

Fox News. What the morons watch and allow themselves to be brainwashed by. Chris Wallace is the son of Mike Wallace, who was a big todo in news at one time.

I'm grateful that you sat through that torment and reported back, thus saving ME from having to sit through it.

I am praying for you all. Or, at least, the atheist version, which is keeping my fingers crossed and keeping a close eye on what Nate Silver is saying.

I am compulsively checking the updates on 538. Hoping that Trump falls so hard that the Democrats have a chance in Congress.

Am almost as depressed by this campaign as I was by Brexit, though your masterful summary has made my smile, no need to watch the full thing now!
