I read the news today, oh Lord …
It started off terribly, with the Oscar Pistorius shooting Reeva Steenkamp story, which no matter what the truth turns out to be is just awful all round.

Then it took a turn for the weird with the Russian meteor story, which is rather an amazing coincidence given that it doesn't seem to be connected to tonight's asteroid bypass. Reports of injuries are still patchy at the moment, I do hope no one has been seriously hurt. The video is just astonishing – like a little sun rising and screaming across the sky.

And it ended happily, with Sam Woodhead being found alive and apparently pretty much well after three days lost in the Queensland Outback, which goes to show that 18-year-old British lads DO sometimes listen to instructions as he's clearly absorbed the message about sheltering by water and not moving in the searing heat. Clever, sensible boy! Well done!

Personally, it has been a day of tired frantic chaos at the end of a fortnight of the same. But I have my cycling kit laundered for tomorrow and have just enough time to wish a few happy birthdays before I fall over in a heap.

A VERY happy birthday to icicle33! I hope your day is utterly splendid, you talented creature, you! May there be so much cake that you will be forced to host a gathering of delightful cake-eating people, who will be so grateful they do your dishes!

And an even MORE HAPPY BIRTHDAY (because I properly know you in the real world and am technically an hour late) to elissande. Fingers crossed I will see you soon and things are less stressful than they were when we last caught up. You're a delightful human, and I hope that your more useful friends have recognised this with bucketloads of gifts. And cake. Because cake is always good!

I'm just going to focus on the good news of Sam living and no one apparently having been killed by that meteor, as the news from Pretoria is all too horrible.

Seriously. What the actual fuck. (Excuse my language.) It's so shocking to read about the Oscar shooting. I'm reserving judgment since news tends to get sensationalized but it's still hard to take in... Wow.

Yeah, I'm with you. It's just boggling. My South African friend tells me that premeditated murder is a charge given for anything that isn't immediate self-defence. She's not a lawyer so I don't know if that's entirely accurate, but it sounds probable to me because South African law is generally well-weighted towards the victims.

And yeah … there's just no good ending because she's dead, and the very best result for him is that it was all a horrible mistake, and even that's not good. I'm going to stick with feeling terribly sorry for everyone involved.
