Still a shambles ...
It is the October Long Weekend in Sydney, a month into spring. Normally this means a heatwave and an aborted walk in the bush ('We should tramp through Ku-ring-gai!' 'Yes! Or we could eat at that fine waterside establishment after managing two miles and deciding that smoke on the horizon is a sign we should turn back now!')

This weekend was somewhat different. To give you a sense of how different, when I was getting dressed this morning I looked out the window and saw sun. So I popped on my blue silk sundress. Then I followed the cats back out into the living room, felt the breeze through the house, and added a pair of red tights. Before we headed out, I threw on a black duster coat. This was fine till around sunset, at which point I added a black and red merino top, black wool jersey scarf, red stripey beanie and red gloves. Not only do I look as though I have turned into a closet fascist, it is 13 degrees Celcius outside and 11 inside.

Having said that, it's significantly better than last night's weather. Last night there were four to six inches of water flooding through Erko's vilage square. Admittedly, this is because we are at the bottom of the hill and all the drains are prone to panicking whenever there is any actual precipitation -- and the houses are all raised a little, so no huge dramas. It meant that our mission for dinner consisted of walking outside with giant umbrellas, wishing we had worn platform shoes, leaping across rivulets, and making it all the way to the Thai on the corner, where we both ordered food and rescued Biscuit the moocher cat, who had found her favourite mooching spot was suddenly an island surrounded by torrent and only just out of the driving rain. She was ferried down to our place under the giant umbrellas, and fed fish while we enjoyed a quite good take-away and ticked off yet another Sign of the Inner West Apocalypse.

In good news, the rain has wiped out the locusts that were noshing on the rosebuds.

All this aside, a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to spark_of_chaos</span>I tried to convince Kimi to win at Suzuka for you, but he was too busy chatting up French blondes. Nonetheless, I hope you have been having and continue to have the most magnificent day possible!

I know there was something else important, but I seem to have spent the whole weekend forgetting everything, even a party. At least I worked out how to videochat: gorgeous to see you London girls!

OH! And I have a new plan. Quick London and Paris in December, much of France and Italy next October/November. So if you see a short person wearing far too many items of clothing scurrying between cultural institutions by the Thames or Seine around Christmas, say hi!

I was looking at Canada! But can only get there through the US at the moment, and that's a whole world of horror I am just not up for on a short trip. But I will make it! I have to see you and Rita!

It is true, I am adorable, if you like muppety little people with lots of hair and patrician noses ;-) But you have gmail! We can videochat! I know how to do that now!

You can go Hawaaii-Vancouver that's not so bad.

It's the ghastliness of US immigration even for transiting passengers that puts me off. Although I suppose Hawaii would be less insane than LAX ...

Both hawaii and san fran are quite good.

San Fran was chaos the last time I was there, but it did not seem to be its default state and it was just after 11/9/01, so I would be willing to risk it again. After many dire LAX experiences, I am happy to fly via Patagonia, the Galapagos or Ulanbaator to avoid it!

San fran has been good the past two years. It was chaos post-liquids scare too.

'Just pour em all in this tub!'

'But if they're explosives designed to detonate on mixing ...'

'Don't you sass me! Get pourin!'
